Name: aligner — aligns objects to a target by position, rotation and scale
Briefly: The script aligns one or more objects relative to a target by position, rotation, and scale. It is convenient in any situation where you need to quickly match objects without manually copying coordinates — whether it's placing props, aligning details, or working with hierarchies.
Installation:
1. Drag the aligner.ms file into the viewport or select Scripting > Run Script — the script will run immediately.
2. For permanent access, copy the file to the scripts/startup folder — it will load automatically each time 3ds Max starts.
3. To assign macros to buttons or hotkeys: open Customize > Customize User Interface, find the MyTools category, and assign the Aligner_Do and Aligner_ToggleUI macros to convenient toolbar buttons or keys.
Functionality:
The interface opens as a separate floater rollout.
Two modes of operation:
— Selection Mode — all objects in the current selection are aligned relative to the last selected one. The target is determined automatically.
— Pick Mode — objects are selected in advance, and the target object is specified with the picker after pressing the Do button.
Position:
Alignment can be enabled separately for the X, Y, Z axes. The source of coordinates can be either the object's pivot or the center of its bounding box — switched with the corresponding option.
Rotation:
Copies the rotation of the target object through matrix alignment — works correctly with any rotation controllers, including List, Look-At, and Rotation Script.
Scale:
Copies the scale of the target object along all axes.
Do Button:
Starts alignment with the current settings. In Pick Mode, it activates the picker to select the target. The entire action is wrapped in a single undo block Aligner with error handling — if there is a failure on any object, changes are rolled back entirely.
Working with hierarchies:
Position and rotation are applied in world coordinates (in coordsys world), ensuring predictable results for child objects in any hierarchies, including non-orthogonal ones.
Settings are saved in an INI file in the plugcfg folder and restored at the next startup.
Macros (MyTools category):
— Aligner_Do — performs alignment with current settings without opening the UI, convenient as a quick repeat.
— Aligner_ToggleUI — opens or closes the floater with the interface.
Compatibility: 3ds Max 2016 and above.
