A modern rethinking of the ancient symbols and crafts of Ukraine towards ethnic minimalism is the direction of thought of designer Mikhail Samoriz.
The collection "Stern" (from German "Star") originates from the name of the traditional ornament "shtern" (asterisk or asterisk, dawn), inherent in the Hutsuls, one of the indigenous peoples of the Carpathians living in western Ukraine.
Hutsul ornaments are characterized by the geometry of patterns created by straight, broken, parallel wavy lines. They also contain simple geometric shapes: triangle, circle, semicircle, square, rhombus. Combinations of lines and shapes make up many patterns.
The graphic basis of the collection is the simple geometric shape of the four-leaf clover, a rare variation of the three-leaf clover. It brings good luck, according to not only Hutsul beliefs.
The chest of drawers from the Stern collection made of natural ash and metal becomes a striking example of ethno-minimalism thanks to its black color and laconic forms. The unusual position of the chest of drawers, which immediately attracts attention, however, does not exclude its functional purpose.
