The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is an American military transport aircraft. It was designed to replace the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter cargo aircraft. It made its first flight on September 15, 1991. It was supplied to the United States Air Force by McDonnell Douglas. The C-17 shares the name of two previous military cargo aircraft: the Douglas C-74 Globemaster and the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. The C-17 typically performs strategic airlift missions for cargo and troops, and additionally performs tactical missions, airlifting medical personnel, and airdropping cargo.
Boeing, which merged with McDonnell Douglas in the 1990s, produced the C-17 for export and for the U.S. Air Force. C-17s are in service with the U.S. Air Force, the Royal Air Force, Australia, Canada, the Qatar Air Force, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, India, and the NATO Heavy Airlift Wing.
On November 30, 2015, it became known that Boeing was ceasing production of the C-17 Globemaster III. On this day, the last serial military transport aircraft was rolled out at the plant in Long Beach, California. The reason for ceasing assembly was financial. The aircraft manufacturer came to this decision in 2013 due to the lack of large orders for the delivery of this type of aircraft
