Installation:
1. Run both files once: drag copyAndPasteObjects.ms into the viewport first, then zz_cpoHotkeys.ms.
2. In the listener (F11), execute getDir #userStartupScripts — the path to the startup folder will open. Copy both files there. Now the script loads automatically when starting Max, without pop-up windows.
Copy and Paste Objects is a clipboard for scene objects that works between different running instances of 3ds Max. COPY saves the current selection to a temporary .max file in a shared folder, and PASTE loads this file into another (or the same) scene via mergeMaxFile. Both instances of Max must be the same version, and the buffer state (number of objects, time, size) is stored in an INI file and preserved between sessions.
How to use:
1. Run the script by dragging the .ms file into the viewport or via Scripting > Run Script. A floating window "Copy and Paste Objects" will open.
2. In the donor scene, select the desired objects and click COPY. The selection will be recorded in the buffer file, and the "Buffer status" block will update.
3. Switch to another instance of 3ds Max (of the same version) and click PASTE. If this instance was opened beforehand, first click Refresh to re-read the buffer state recorded by another process.
4. The Options group controls the paste: "Paste to original coordinates" preserves the original coordinates; otherwise, objects are pasted at the center of the active viewport; "Select pasted objects" selects the pasted objects; the dropdown "On name conflict" determines the behavior on name conflicts — Auto-rename, Merge/Replace, or Skip existing.
5. In the "Temp folder" group, the Set folder... button sets the shared buffer folder, Open temp folder opens it in Explorer, and Clear buffer deletes the buffer file.
Hotkeys:
1. Customize → Hotkey Editor → type Copy Objects and Paste Objects in the search.
2. Assign Ctrl+Shift+C to the Copy Objects (hotkey) action, and Ctrl+Shift+V to the Paste Objects (hotkey) action. Click Save.
Done. Ctrl+Shift+C copies the selection in one Max window, Ctrl+Shift+V pastes it in another. If you need the tool window (slots, settings) — the macro "Copy/Paste Objects" is in the same category MyTools.
Compatibility: 3ds Max 2016 and newer. Pure MAXScript. Both instances between which copy/paste is performed must be the same version of 3ds Max.
