There are two max files in the archive, for max 2011 and for max 2014.
Users of V-Ray version are lower than 3.1 it is more convenient to select a file for max 2011.
In the file for max 2014, the materials in the BRDF section are Microfaset GTR (GGX), if your version is lower than 3.1, then the BRDF field will be empty. Select Blinn.
