EG Gradient Poly / Element Select
Random selection of polygons and elements by density gradient. The result is visible immediately as you move the sliders.
Demo video of the script in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GQLeUlx_Nk
Suitable for procedural destruction, wear, detail placement, mosaics, and any effects where you need "denser at the bottom, sparser at the top" without manual work.
What it can do
Selects polygons or whole elements (separate 3D parts within one Editable Poly). Toggle buttons Polygon / Element, as in Max.
The density of the selection smoothly changes along the selected direction: a lot at the bottom, almost none at the top.
All settings work in real-time:
Density: maximum selection density.
Center: position of the gradient center.
Softness: softness of the edge, from smooth transition to sharp edge.
Rotation: rotation of the gradient direction.
Gradient plane: gradient plane XY, XZ, or YZ.
Seed / New seed: new variant of random selection.
Works on flat and volumetric objects!
The gradient is calculated in local coordinates: the object can be moved, rotated, and scaled, the gradient remains in place.
Accepts Editable Poly with modifiers on top (Shell, Edit Poly, and others).
Supports undo (Ctrl+Z) after releasing the slider.
Installation
Drag the file EG_Gradient_Poly_Element_Select.mcr into the 3ds Max viewport.
Open Customize → Customize User Interface → Toolbars, category EG_Scripts.
Drag Gradient Random Polygon / Element Selection onto the toolbar (optionally assign a hotkey on the Keyboard tab).
Usage
Select the object (Editable Poly).
Click the button on the panel, a window will open.
Choose the Polygon or Element mode, the gradient plane, and move the sliders.
Compatibility
Tested in 3ds Max 2023, independent of the renderer. The object must be Editable Poly. Edit Poly and Editable Mesh as a base are not supported.
