Tapestry William Morris Owl and Willow

Tapestry featuring images of animals and plants with tassels

Morris believed that one should choose "simple" subjects, drawing inspiration from native nature. "Isn't it better to have wallpapers or curtains that evoke thoughts of the meadows of Picardy or the grapevines in your garden, rather than dreary rows of fake flowers and leaves that you can only count out of boredom?" he questioned, criticizing industrial "mass production."
