Lefoche revolvers are named after French designers Casimir and Eugene Lefoche.
In 1851, at the Great Exhibition of Industrial Works of All Nations in London, together with other engineers and industrialists, the French gunsmith designer presented his invention, Casimir Lefoche. Foreign experts were interested in his weapons and cartridges. This gave rise to the founding of a company for the production of pin cartridges and weapons for them.
By this time, Casimir Lefoche and his son Eugene had created and marketed a range of small arms of various calibers. These products were popular and sold both in France and abroad.
In 1854, Casimir's son Eugene Lefoche developed a new revolver with a 12 mm pin cartridge ("cartouche à broche"). The military became interested in this product, and after extensive testing and a number of bureaucratic procedures in 1858, the Lefaucheux M1858 revolver officially entered service first with the French Navy and then with the ground forces. This was the first time in the world that a revolver was put into service, and it served as an additional advertisement for new weapons and original cartridges.
Of course, other countries soon became interested in these revolvers. For example, in 1859, after the tests, Russia and France concluded several contracts for the supply of these weapons. Later, after the Russian side received the necessary documentation, Russia launched the production of weapons at its factories. Interestingly, the officers were advised to purchase these revolvers at their own expense.
