In Greek religion and mythology - the god of fertility and wine.
Legends mentioning him are numerous and contradictory. However, he was one of the most important gods for the Greeks and was associated with various religious cults. Most likely, he was an "alien" god brought to Greece from Thrace. According to the legend of Orpheus, he was the son of Zeus and Persephone; according to other legends, he was the son of Zeus and Semele and was raised by nymphs in the Nysaean Valley, where he invented the art of winemaking.
