A one-click texture relinking tool that changes texture formats in your scene between PNG and JPEG (in either direction) without disrupting any settings.
What it does
If you've ever had to change textures throughout an entire scene from PNG to JPEG (or vice versa), you know the pain: dozens of Bitmap nodes, each with its own settings for Gamma, Override, Blur, UVW... And if you simply enter a new file path, half of these parameters get reset or lost.
This script scans the entire scene, finds every texture actually used in materials, and — if a file with the same name but a different extension is nearby — offers to relink it. You get a convenient checklist, review what will change, and click Apply.
Works with any render engine
The scanner does not search through a hardcoded list of map types. Instead, it traverses the actual material and map graph of your scene (sub-materials, sub-maps, Multi/Sub-Object, Blend, Mix, nested maps, etc.) and automatically identifies any node where the image path is specified — regardless of which renderer created it. This means it works out of the box with:
Standard / Physical Bitmap
Corona Bitmap
V-Ray Bitmap / VRayHDRI
Octane Image Texture
Any other bitmap maps from renderers (Redshift, Arnold, etc.), including plugins that store the path inside the BitMap object rather than just as a string (e.g., Displace, VRayBmpFilter).
The script only affects those textures that are actually connected to a material — assigned to an object, present in the material editor, or used as an environment map. It never touches random unused nodes floating in the scene.
All texture settings remain exactly as they were
This is what makes the script safe to run across the entire scene at once: before changing the texture file path, the tool takes a complete snapshot of all other parameters of that node and then immediately restores them. This includes:
Gamma — whether Automatic or Override (and the exact value of the override)
Blur
UVW mapping / tiling / real-world scale (UVW settings, tiling, real-world scale)
Any other properties specific to that type of bitmap map in a particular render engine.
So, no matter how gamma or blur settings were configured before the replacement, everything will remain exactly the same afterwards — you will never have to manually go into each map to adjust Override/Automatic or double-check settings.
Change direction at any time
The checkbox allows you to switch the search direction:
PNG → JPEG (default) — finds JPEG next to each PNG texture and relinks to it.
JPEG → PNG — works the other way, finds the PNG version.
You can toggle this mode back and forth on the already scanned list without needing to rescan the scene.
Additionally: a separate script for automatic asset loading from the scene has also been added.
Other conveniences
Color coding by texture type (Normal, Roughness, Metallic, Base Color, AO, etc.) with an optional "Group by Type" display mode.
If the same texture is used in multiple materials/objects, it is displayed as a single line — when you click Apply, it will update everywhere it is used.
Manual override: double-click any line for which no automatic match was found to manually select a replacement file.
A detailed log on screen with a "Copy Log" button so you can see exactly what the scanner found and did.
How to use
Drag the .ms file directly into the 3ds Max viewport (or through the MAXScript → Run Script menu).
For the button, you need to drag the MZP into the 3ds Max viewport and restart Max; otherwise, the button icon will not display.
Click Scan Scene.
Review the checklist (uncheck items you don’t need to relink).
Click Apply.
