The Mi-8 is a Soviet multi-purpose helicopter developed by the Moscow experimental design bureau OKB-329 of the 1st Directorate of the State Committee for Aviation Technology (GKAT) of the USSR. Chief Designer of the OKB-329 was M. L. Mil.
The Mi-8 (including modifications) is the most mass-produced twin-engine helicopter in the world; it is the most mass-produced helicopter in the history of aviation[6] and the second (after the UH-60) in terms of the number of active helicopters in the armed forces of the world. It is widely used in more than 50 countries around the world to perform a variety of civil and military tasks. Mi-8 helicopters, as a rule, have dual purpose, which is indicated in the type certificate; in Russia, helicopters with a military purpose can only be sold by the state company Rosoboronexport, which is part of the Rostec corporation. All other helicopters that are freely available for sale have only a civil purpose.
