The Mi-8 is a Soviet multi-purpose helicopter developed by the Moscow experimental design bureau OKB-329 of the 1st Directorate of the State Committee for Aviation Technology (GKAT) of the USSR. Chief Designer of the OKB is M. L. Mil
The Mi-8 (including modifications) is the most mass-produced twin-engine helicopter in the world; it is the most mass-produced helicopter in the history of aviation[6] and the second (after the UH-60) in terms of the number of active helicopters in the armed forces of the world. It is widely used in more than 50 countries around the world to perform a variety of civil and military tasks. Mi-8 helicopters, as a rule, have dual purpose, which is indicated in the type certificate; in Russia, helicopters with military purpose can only be sold by the state company Rosoboronexport, which is part of the Rostec corporation. All other helicopters that are freely available for sale have only civil purpose.
