In 1973, the Schwartz family revolutionized footwear by introducing an innovative direct molding technique that makes boots completely waterproof. The yellow boots, which can be worn all year round, gave rise to the development of the brand: the model name Timberlander ("Man of the Forest") was later shortened to Timberland.

Since 1980, the brand's shoes have been produced in Italy, which makes the brand international. In 1983, Timberland footwear began testing in the harsh climate of Alaska, during the Iditarod dog sled race. In 1986, the first Timberland store opens in Newport, Rhode Island. The slogan "Quality is higher than you will ever need" has become a famous Timberland slogan. Later branches appear in France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain.
