The monument was erected in 1924 on the central square of Bakhmut in honor of F. A. Sergeev (Artem), a revolutionary, Soviet statesman and party leader. The author of the monument is the sculptor I. P. Kavaleridze. It was destroyed during the occupation in 1942. The monument is a unique example of avant-garde monumental sculpture, vividly displaying all the features of this unique style in art, generated by the revolutionary transformations in the society of that time. The monument lacks features of a "pure" style, despite the generally accepted opinion that Artem's style of execution belongs to cubism. Although the author himself denied such a simplified attitude to his work, the influence of the avant-garde movement is certainly felt in the figure of the monument, but there are other stylistic features here as well. The unconventional composition of the monument is a dynamic pedestal with a serpentine, from which the figure of the hero seemed to grow. The gradual, steady movement of the main architectural masses upwards, not vertically but spirally, the boldness of the large slopes created the impression of a rippling mass of stone that seemed to be moving. The slopes of the pedestal were intended for a tribune that could accommodate up to 60 people. A passage for transport was arranged under the pedestal. On this powerful base stood the figure of Artem in the pose of an orator. The height of the reinforced concrete monument was about 30 meters.
